Medical Laboratory Scientist/Laboratory Information Systems - Full Time
The Medical Laboratory Scientist/LIS will perform a dual role, ensuring accurate laboratory testing while serving as the primary point of contact for the Laboratory Information System (LIS). This position involves performing laboratory tests, optimizing workflows, maintaining LIS databases, developing policies and procedures, training staff, and collaborating with hospital departments and medical personnel to ensure seamless LIS operation and precise laboratory performance.
Laboratory Information System Functions:
- Manage and maintain the LIS, including configuration, updates, and database management.
- Develop and implement LIS workflows and protocols to optimize efficiency and accuracy.
- Troubleshoot LIS-related issues and work with vendors and IT teams for resolution.
- Develop and document LIS procedures and policies, ensuring integration with laboratory practices.
- Participate in LIS upgrades, testing, and validation of new systems or software patches.
- Collaborate with clinical and administrative teams to ensure LIS meets evolving laboratory needs.
- Monitor LIS-related projects, ensuring adherence to timelines and deliverables.
- Participate in the planning and vision-setting for future laboratory informatics and technology initiatives.
- Serve as liaison between laboratory staff, IT, and hospital departments regarding LIS matters.
Clinical Laboratory Functions:
- Perform, analyze, and interpret laboratory tests in areas including hematology, microbiology, immunology, chemistry, and transfusion services.
- Utilize professional judgment in the interpretation of clinical lab results, ensuring sample integrity, process calibration, reagent stability, and quality control.
- Document and report test results to medical staff, recognizing critical values and following established reporting protocols.
- Monitor, calibrate, and maintain laboratory equipment to ensure accurate test performance, including troubleshooting technical and procedural issues.
- Perform phlebotomy duties as necessary, including legal alcohol draws and testimony in court as required.
- Evaluate, validate, and implement new laboratory methodologies and technologies.
- Ensure compliance with all laboratory accreditation requirements and regulatory standards (e.g., CAP, CLIA, OSHA, Joint Commission).
Training and Support:
- Provide training to laboratory and clinical staff on LIS operations and laboratory procedures.
- Develop course documentation and facilitate training sessions for new LIS implementations or updates.
- Offer ongoing support for LIS users, responding to issues and providing timely resolutions.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- Strong understanding of clinical laboratory operations, workflows, and regulations.
- Proficiency in LIS management, including configuration, troubleshooting, and database maintenance.
- Knowledge of laboratory methodologies, instrumentation, and quality control.
- Excellent communication skills to effectively train, support, and collaborate across departments.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks, prioritize, and work under pressure in a clinical environment.
- Proficiency in computer systems and LIS-related software.
- Detail-oriented with strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to perform physical tasks including standing for extended periods, moving equipment, and performing manual dexterity tasks.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
