Phlebotomist Apprentice

General Summary: Under the general supervision of the laboratory director, the phlebotomist apprentice assumes responsibility for performing venipuncture and related procedures.

Essential Job Functions*:

  • Maintains phlebotomy stations (and trays) in a sanitary and properly supplied condition at all times.
  • Greets patients in a courteous manner by introducing self and asking the patient to give their name.
  • Verifies correct patient by performing Positive Patient ID (PPID) process defined in the Hospital Information System.
  • Washes hands before and after each patient contact.
  • Uses proper technique in obtaining blood samples.
  • Draws the blood properly, and rarely misses a vein (asks for help after two (2) tries) on any patient.
  • Disposes of used needles after use in suitable containers, and does not recap needles.
  • Uses time between tests to departmental advantage by filling in with office work, assisting technical staff, performing general duties such as putting away supplies, and performing other duties as necessary, submitting laboratory charges, and scanning patient results into the Laboratory Information System.
  • Seeks information or asks for assistance from appropriate personnel regarding patients who present difficulties.
  • Complies with hospital and departmental policies, procedures, regulations and standards as related to job.
  • Demonstrates hospital's stated mission and values of teamwork, respect and communication with co-workers, patients, families and visitors.
  • Actively and appropriately participates in problem-solving identification and resolution, both intra- and inter-departmentally.
  • Meets department customer service standards and strives to enhance the level of customer service provided.
  • Performs CLIA waived testing as needed.


Qualifications:

  • Education


Required: High school graduate or GED equivalent

Preferred: Completion of phlebotomy certification program or Medical Assistant course

  • Work Experience


Required:

Preferred: At least 3 months phlebotomy experience. Experience in a hospital setting preferred.

  • Licensure/Certifications/Registrations


Required:

Preferred: Certification through national credentialing association such as American Society of Phlebotomy Technicians.

  • Other Skills/Knowledge


Required: Good customer service/interpersonal skills; detail oriented; have good manual dexterity.
